Abstract

The learners’ errors have long been a subject of discussion among English languageteachers. Now error analysis has become a major topic in the field of language acquisition as itcan be used as a mirror to see what strategies the language learner is using when they arelearning the target language (TL). The very fact that students of English consistently make thesame kinds of mistakes during their period of learning means that there is an interim periodwhere the learners have their own concepts of how the language works which is not inaccordance with the standardized grammar of the target language. The foreign languagelearner’s English errors should not be considered as being erroneous rather they are part of theprocess they have to undergo in learning the foreign language. So, this study is an attempt to Investigate why the English department students, specifically in STIBA Saraswati Denpasar failto produce correct English sentences in spite of the many years they have received instruction inEnglish. In order to find out the answer to that question this study tries to analyze the students’grammatical errors they have made in their writing assignment in class. Then, the results of thisstudy can be used to empower the language learners to avoid errors they usually make.
